I was so happy to see your reply which ...Hi, Jules.
I was so happy to see your reply which I did just after we arrived in Mayrhofen this past Tuesday. (We live in the USA, in Boston.) We are now just winding up our 4 days of glorious hiking. Your blog info proved quite helpful and I am so grateful, since, as I mentioned, it appeared a challenge to get good detailed info. I would especially like to thank you for your map recommendation, which proved invaluable, and for mentioning kaiserschmarm, which I had never heard of, I am now a better person, if now a bit less slender.
I love your emphasis on the food and local cuisine, since I find myself completely preoccupied with thoughts of food if not always, then especially toward the end of a day's hiking!
We had the amazing good fortune of 4 beautiful warm, rain-free days, which apparently was a complete aberrertion form the past weeks which were cold and rainy. Since we had been vigilantly checking the weather reports we were thrilled to leave our long-johns, rain pants and heavy fleece covers in the hotel. Plus, we had clear skies, and breathtaking views all week. Definitely a gift from the heavens.
Our 4 days in a nutshell:
We stayed at a (relatively speaking) post-summer months bargain rate at the Huber Gasthaus, a delightful inn off the beaten path, just over the river.
Day 1: We took the Ahornbahn and walked to the Edelhutte (thus, kaiserschmaram) with lotsa snow (actually more slush than snow) to stare at up on the Ahornspitz. We were still a bit jet-lagged, and getting used to altitude, so that was enough for the day.
Day 2: We signed up for one of the Zillertal group hiking tours at the tourist office with "a local hiking expert" just to see what it would be like. (We almost never venture out with a group.) We had a fabulous day! We drove (we had rented a car since it was cheaper than the shuttle from the Munich airport) to the Breitlahner Haus in Ginzling and from there hiked past several huttes to the Berliner Hutte which was a sight to behold! We took an extra roundabout way with extra up and down to the tune of 300 m or so to see the glacial kettle and have a more dramatic approach to the Hutte.
Day 3: We took the Penkenbahn to the Wanglspitz. Very lovely, and, yes, so much fun to see such a full metropolis atop the mountain!
Day 4: The grand finale: Drove through Ginzling, past the Breitlahner Inn, up the "scenic toll road" complete with extended one-lane excitement (including almost slamming into a cow wandering alone in the depths of a tunnnel). Parked at the beautiful sclegeisspeichersee. Took path #535, the roundabout longer, scenic glacial kettle mountainside ridge path to the Olpererhutte, which was beyond description magnificent. Then down path #502.
All and all, a fabulous vacation. Thank goodness for the weather gods! Again, I am so very grateful for your blog -- I will be reading up to get ideas for our future rambles!
Cheers!nbh999https://www.blogger.com/profile/08704717017157164916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-66495696554658998032014-07-21T23:07:16.225-07:002014-07-21T23:07:16.225-07:00Hi nbh999

Sorry I've not replied earlier - I've been away for a couple of weeks - so I hope you check in again and pick this up.

It's true there are a lot of options, but in a way that is one of the beauties of the area - something for everyone, whatever the weather. However, I think most of the walks outlined in the blog would be suitable, with the possible exception of the attempt on the Ahorn summit. Certainly most of the rest will fall into your distance/ascent bands. The Penken gondola probably opens up the most options, as there are a multitude of paths leading off from there - the ridge walk and descent to Vorderlannersbach, followed by the bus back to Mayrhofen being a nice example.

The best advice I can give other than that is to consider buying lift passes for ease (if you intend to use the lifts/buses regularly - the bus station is easy to use and has services to quite a few of the outlying villages and neighbouring towns) and get a good map (we had the Freytag & Berndt map). Hotels and other places have some info, but there is quite a good tourist information office about 50m off the bottom end of the main street that is worth a visit. My suggestion would be to start near town and go further afield as you get more comfortable with with how the transport set up works.

I hope this helps - if you have any other specific questions let me know, and I'll do my best to help.

Otherwise have a great trip!

Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16576395337502021082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-40636460391908417542014-07-05T13:30:35.263-07:002014-07-05T13:30:35.263-07:00Hi, Jules. We are going to Mayrhofen to hike at the beginning of September; friends told us they had a hard time figuring out where to hike when they were there because there were "so many options, and not a lot of information about how to choose." This will help -- any other ideas about how to figure out our daily plan? We are in our 50s, in good shape, hoping for 1000-2500 ft daily elevation and 5-10-ish mile hikes....thank you!nbh999https://www.blogger.com/profile/08704717017157164916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-29150835258309310612013-06-22T05:16:31.777-07:002013-06-22T05:16:31.777-07:00Hi Jules, I'm off to Mayrhofen on Monday for a...Hi Jules, I'm off to Mayrhofen on Monday for a couple of weeks. As you say, though, much more of a challenge from valley level without a handy cable car!

We really enjoyed our visit (well two visits, actually: one summer, one winter) and certainly want to go back again sometime - I really do want to bag the Ahorn if there is a decent day!

Perhaps you'll get a chance to let us know how you got on?

Cheers

JulesJuleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16576395337502021082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-23928536110964087382013-06-12T09:41:00.020-07:002013-06-12T09:41:00.020-07:00What a great blog, loads of really useful informat...What a great blog, loads of really useful information. I spent a week in Mayrhofen a few years back and managed to make the summit of Ahornspitze, the views were spectacular. I'm heading back for another week in about 10 days. This time I'm going to have a crack at a summit called Dristner, starting from the village of Ginzling. No gondola or chair-lift so it'll be a long day! Thanks again for blog and the great photos.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16642936923208860866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-46952915910568390872012-07-01T23:23:11.649-07:002012-07-01T23:23:11.649-07:00Hi Anon

Once you have got your bearings, bought a map and worked out where the buses and lifts will take you, there's loads to go at. If you intend to walk the surrounding area I would definitely recommend a weekly travel pass - available from several places such as the gondola stations and the Tourist Info. I can't remember the exact price, but if you use it twice a day or so you'll easily get good value out of it!

The accommodation is fine - fairly basic, but nothing wrong, good value and very central.

Let me know if you have any specific concerns and I'll try and help!Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16576395337502021082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-44156792554031908742012-07-01T14:35:13.136-07:002012-07-01T14:35:13.136-07:00Off here in a couple of weeks and found this reall...Off here in a couple of weeks and found this really useful. End June, early July should be a good time to go - it can often be fresher that later in the summer when it gets humid and prone to storms!

The map mentioned at the top of the post is one of several, and one of the best. They are widely available in town, and, if you are reasonably proficient at map reading there are no end of paths/lifts/buses to link to make up your own routes. Or you could choose one from the little booklet of walks that comes with the map! We enjoyed all the ones we did, but there are loads more options.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, whatever you do.

JulesJuleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16576395337502021082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8924560762707341331.post-76373629219991763632012-03-21T23:06:59.091-07:002012-03-21T23:06:59.091-07:00Incredibly useful, probably the only really useful...Incredibly useful, probably the only really useful description of walking in this area that I have come across.
